(n. 28 sep. 1950, Schenectady, N.Y., EE.UU.).

Director de cine estadounidense. Se graduó en el Williams College y escribió relatos breves y novelas, como Union Dues (1977), antes de dedicarse a escribir guiones para Roger Corman. Debutó como director con la aclamada Return of the Secaucus Seven (1980). Indagó en temas políticos y sociales en otras películas comprometidas como Lianna (1982), Matewan (1987), Ocho hombres (1988), Ciudad de esperanza (1991), Lone star (1996), La tierra prometida (2002) y Silver city (2004), y por lo general escribió sus propios guiones. También dirigió la película infantil El secreto de la isla de las focas (1994). Sayles es uno de los cineastas independientes de mayor éxito en EE.UU.
